Introduction
The Standards Publication Program of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is the
responsibility of the ASA Committee on Standards (ASACOS) and the ASA Standards
Secretariat, headed by its Standards Manager.
The Acoustical Society of America provides the Secretariat for four standards committees
accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI): S1 on Acoustics, S2 on
Mechanical Vibration and Shock, S3 on Bioacoustics, and S12 on Noise.
International Committees
These four accredited standards committees also provide the United States input to various
international committees of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Standards Committees S1 on Acoustics and S3 on Bioacoustics provide the United States
input to ISO/TC43, Acoustics and IEC/TC29, Electroacoustics, as the Technical Advisory
Groups.
S12 on Noise serves as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for ISO/TC43/SC1, Noise.
S3 is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for ISO/TC108/SC4, Human Exposure to
Mechanical Vibration and Shock.
S2 serves as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for ISO/TC108, Mechanical Vibration, Shock and Condition Monitoring; ISO/TC108/SC1, Balancing, including Balancing Machines; ISO/TC108/SC2,
Measurement and Evaluation of Mechanical Vibration and Shock as Applied to Machines,
Vehicles, and Structures: ISO/TC108/SC3, Use and Calibration of Vibration and Shock
Measuring Instruments; ISO/TC108/SC5, Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics of Machines;
and ISO/TC108/SC6, Vibration and Shock Generating Systems.
ASACOS and the ASA Standards Secretariat provide administration for the U.S. Technical
Advisory Groups listed above and administer the international Secretariat for ISO/TC108,
Mechanical Vibration, Shock and Condition Monitoring as well as the Secretariats for ISO/TC108/SC1, Balancing and ISO/TC108/SC5, Condition.
Standards are reaffirmed (confirmed, in the case of International Standards) revised, or
withdrawn every five years. The latest information on current ANSI and International Standards,
as well as those under preparation, is available from the Standards Secretariat.
The ASA Standards Secretariat maintains a licensing agreement with the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI) for the sale and reproduction of the IEC and ISO Standards under the
following International Technical Committees or their respective Subcommittees: ISO/TC43
Acoustics, ISO/TC108 Mechanical Vibration, Shock and Condition Monitoring, and IEC/TC29 Electroacoustics.
International Standards produced by these International Committees may be ordered from the
ASA Standards Secretariat.
International standards produced by the Subcommittee(s) that exist under these Technical
Committees (noted above) are not designated by ISO separately from the main Technical
Committees. The developing subcommittee is listed only inside the standard. However, if one
takes the link to International Standards, the
standards are listed by the specific subcommittee. For example, an international standard on
balancing machines, which is developed by ISO/TC108/SC1 can be found by taking the link in
the listing to ISO/TC43/SC1.
