Funded Awards

The Acoustical Society Foundation has funded several awards through donations made to the Foundation.

Raymond H. Stetson Scholarship in Phonetics and Speech Science


This scholarship, which was established through a grant to the Acoustical Society Foundation in 1998, honors the memory of Professor Raymond H. Stetson, a pioneer investigator in phonetics and speech science. Its purpose is to facilitate the research efforts of promising graduate students and postgraduates. Nine Stetson Scholars have been named since 1999.

Medwin Prize in Acoustical Oceanography


The Medwin Prize in Acoustical Oceanography was established in 2000 from a grant made to the Acoustical Society Foundation by Herman and Eileen Medwin to recognize a person for the effective use of sound in the discovery and understanding of physical and biological parameters and processes in the sea. There have been eight recipients of the Medwin Prize since 2001.

Rossing Prize in Acoustics Education


The Rossing Prize in Acoustics Education was established in 2003 from a grant made to the Acoustical Society Foundation by Thomas D. Rossing to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions toward furthering acoustics education through distinguished teaching, creation of educational materials, textbook writing and other activities. There have been four recipients of the Rossing Prize since 2004.

Robert W. Young Memorial Fund


Evelyn C Young, widow of Robert W. Young, provided a generous gift as the initial contribution to the Robert W. Young Memorial Fund. Additional gifts honoring the memory and many contributions of Robert W. Young may be made to supplement the initial gift. Earnings from the Fund are to be used for support of the development of international standards in acoustics, and for awards for undergraduate student research in acoustics.

Robert W. Young Award for Undergraduate Student Research in Acoustics

The objective of these awards is to encourage undergraduate students to perform independent research in acoustics and related topics. Awards may be made annually. Three grants have been made since 2004.

Robert W. Young Travel Awards for Support of the Development of International Standards in Acoustics

The object of these Travel Awards is to provide limited financial support to assist individual experts to participate in the development of International Standards prepared by Technical Committee 29, Electroacoustics, of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC/TC), and by Subcommittee 1, Noise, of Technical Committee 43, Acoustics, of the International Standards Organization (ISO/TC 43/SC 1), or their successor organizations.
