The plot on the left indicates the annual growth of the following:
Total membership of the Society in all categories, as reported in the
spring of each year, usually in the April issue of JASA. There are now six
categories of membership: Honorary Fellow, Fellow, Full Member, Associate
Member, Student Member, and Emeritus Member.
Number of Fellows, as reported in the spring of each year.
Total number of pages published each
year in the Journal (JASA). This total (since 1990) includes all text pages
and indexes in regular issues and supplements, References to
Contemporary Papers in Acoustics, and abstracts of papers in meeting
programs, but excludes advertisements and other "front" material.
Note that the size of journal pages increased in 1974 from 7 7/8 x 10 1/2
to 8 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches. This increase resulted in an estimated increase
of about 7 % in the number of text characters per page.
The registration per regular meeting
of the Society. This is a 4-meeting average obtained each year by combining
the registration at the meetings held within the year with that at the fall
meeting of the previous year and the spring meeting of the subsequent year,
except that the ICA meeting in 1956 has been omitted.
The number of paper abstracts submitted
per meeting. This is also a 4-meeting average calculated as for the
registration per meeting number.
