Acoustical Society of America

2009 Innovative Project Competition

Guidelines for Proposals

Submission Deadline: Monday, 15 December 2008

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) invites the submission of applications for innovative projects to be sponsored by the ASA.

Projects must differ from the typical activities of the ASA Technical Committees and have the potential to increase the vitality, scope, and size of the Society both now and in the future.

To encourage thinking "outside the box," the Executive Council has allocated $10,000 to fund a competition for innovation projects. Proposals will be evaluated and selected for funding by the Innovation ad hoc Committee. This committee is comprised of the following ASA members who have served as Technical Committee chairs or officers: Donna Neff, Chair; Bennett Brooks, Carr Everbach, George Frisk, Mardi Hastings, Diane Kewley-Port, Mauro Pierucci, Lily Wang, Jan Weisenberger, with David Feit (Treasurer) and Victor Sparrow (Vice President) as ex officio members.

This competition was discussed at the ASA/Acoustics'08 meeting in Paris, with the expectation that guidelines and forms would be available this fall. The submission deadline of December 15th has been set several weeks after the Fall ASA meeting in Miami to foster communication about proposals for those attending the meeting. Note, however, that you need not attend the Miami meeting to submit a proposal.

Please submit proposals using the designated Innovative Projects Proposal form following the Guidelines provided below. There will be some flexibility in the process. That is, if a project is judged to be highly innovative and worthy of funding, but the Committee feels additional information is needed beyond that provided in the proposal, the sponsors of the project will be contacted for further input after the submission deadline.

Guidelines

1. Each application must be sponsored by one or more Technical Committees of the ASA. Projects may be undertaken by any ASA member or group of members. Each project must be approved by the appropriate Technical Committee (TC) Chair(s) before submission to assure their knowledge of the project. Contact information for TC Chairs is given below these Guidelines. The role of TC Chairs is to encourage and support submission of these projects.

2. The maximum project funding request is $10,000. Budgets of all sizes are encouraged. Depending on the proposals received, one large proposal may be funded or several smaller ones until the $10,000 limit is reached.

3. 3. Use a separate ASA Innovative Project Application Form for each project. More than one project may be submitted by an individual or group. Download a proposal form here or contact Elaine Moran (elaine@aip.org) at ASA Headquarters to request an electronic copy.

4. Submit proposals electronically to ASA at asa@aip.org, with copies to the Chair(s) of the sponsoring Technical Committee(s). The deadline for receipt of proposals for 2009 funding is Monday, December 15, 2008 at midnight EST. Proposals will be judged on the following criteria:

a) How inventive is the proposed project in identifying activities and methods for stimulating the growth and breadth of the Society?

b) What are the potential short- and long-term effects of the project on the activities and vitality of the Society?

c) What ASA groups are potentially impacted by the project?

5. Decisions on project funding will be made no later than February 1st, 2009, after which all applicants will be notified of the outcome by their TC Chair or a member of the Innovation ad hoc Committee.
