Job Description:
Purpose: Provide science-based leadership on core competency and innovation projects for ophthalmic surgical equipment.

Become a key contributor on a customer oriented, technology based team in a growth-focused company. We are looking for a curious, creative and quick thinking individual interested in understanding the science behind product performance and using this understanding to drive new product innovation. Technical strengths and experience in ultrasound and fluidics or a strong desire to learn about these areas will be necessary. You will be working on medical products including low frequency ultrasound handpieces, pneumatically driven handpieces, and irrigation and aspiration pumps. You will be modeling and working at the bench to validate models and prove feasibility. You will be scientific, but will be able to explain basic scientific concepts to laypersons in simple terms, and will be comfortable presenting technical concepts to a broad array of people. Good laboratory technique and lab notebook maintenance will be required, and there will be significant opportunity for publication and / or invention.

Detailed description: Principal scientist position in a medical device company. The successful candidate will be:
  • Able to provide scientific leadership on new product innovations for ophthalmic surgical equipment at the individual contributor level.
  • Responsible for evaluating the science behind new product ideas from internal and external sources and as well as generating and proving new product ideas.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining a database of past and current product innovations and patents, and creating and maintaining an industry wide IP map.
  • Willing to spend significant time at a bench building initial prototypes and demonstrating new principles.
  • Capable of creating multiple successful patent applications and supporting multiple science papers by surgeons each year.
  • Available for immediate hire
  • Key areas of scientific insight include fluidic and ultra-sonic principles; familiarity with electrosurgical concepts will be of benefit. Good laboratory experience and practice will be required, including the design and documentation of experiments and automation of data collection.

    Qualifications:
    Education: PhD in physics or other science area or equivalent experience in fluidics and ultrasound preferred. Candidates with an MS or a background in electrical or mechanical engineering will be considered based on past accomplishments.

    Experience: 10+ years expected / preferred, but portfolio of patents, papers and innovative development more critical.

    Special Skills: Good laboratory and sciences skills expected, including documentation of activity. Must be capable of building up automated data collection systems and mathematical modeling and simulation of new concepts. Excellent oral and written communication skills required for communicating recommendations to management and external peers. We expect competence in Mathematica / MathCad or other simulation tool, as well as software manipulation of video images.
