Transducer Design Engineer

Seeking an innovative engineer to design and implement high-frequency transducer arrays that
form the sensor elements of multi-frequency underwater acoustic Doppler systems

Nortek Scientific

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Nortek Scientific is a newly formed company dedicated to developing innovative underwater acoustic sensors for high resolution measurements of water velocity and sediment transport. Working closely with parent company Nortek AS (Norway) and academic partners at Dalhousie University and Memorial University, we will be engaging in cutting edge underwater acoustic physics, advanced Doppler processing, transducer design and firmware & software development.

One of our first projects will require multi-tone transmit and receive transducers for high resolution water profiling. For this work, we need to look at modern broadband materials with good stability that can be deployed underwater to a depth of a few hundred meters. The transducer design engineer tasks will be to identify and model the material response, develop the transducer stack in cooperation with our analog design engineers, help establish a suitable mechanical assembly in cooperation with our mechanical engineers, build prototype models that can be implemented and tested in real-world settings, and work with our production department in implementing transducer production procedures.

Key elements of education and work history include:
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in acoustics or electrical engineering.
  • Good understanding of of acoustic theory and transducer design, including the application of broadband materials.
  • Experience building and testing transducers for underwater applications.
  • 5-10 years research or industry experience.
  • We are seeking candidates with a strong history of and commitment to innovative research & development. Salaries are competitive and commensurate with experience.

Nortek Scientific is located in Canada's National Research Council (NRC) Industrial Partnership Facility on the Dalhousie University campus (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada).
