Underwater Acoustic Communications
Applications are invited for a research position that will become available during the third trimester of 2009 in the Signal Processing Laboratory (SiPLAB) at the Center of Technological Research (CINTAL), University of
Algarve, Faro, Portugal, under the Underwater Acoustic Network (UAN) project. SiPLAB is one of the european leading university laboratories in underwater acoustic signal processing, including prototype equipment development,
source localization and sonar, model-based inversion algorithms and underwater communications (see details in www.siplab.fct.ualg.pt).
The successful candidate will lead research carried out in the scope of the European Union-funded UAN project (reference FP7-225669), whose main objective is to develop methodologies and operational technologies for the
implementation of underwater acoustic communication networks to be integrated as a component of a multi-media network for the surveillance and monitoring of critical at sea infrastructures.
Applicants must have a PhD in electrical engineering, applied mathematics or physics with a strong emphasis on signal processing and/or digital communications, as well as good programming skills in MATLAB and C/C++. He/she
should be fluent in written and spoken English. Mandatory qualifications: experience in signal processing and underwater acoustics. Desirable qualifications: experience in communications, array processing, image processing
and/or ocean acoustic propagation modelling. The successful applicant will be given a six month duration contract, reneweable every six month, up to a total maximum of 24 months.
The monthly net allowance will be 2.500 Euro plus social security coverage and work accident insurance. Travel expenses incurred by the candidate to and from country of origin if leaving abroad from Portugal at the time of
hiring will be reimbursed. CINTAL research positions are subject to fellowship regulations (see www.ualg.pt/cintal/ for more information).
